Many different experiences come with the beauty of natural waves, kinks, and coils. Living with curly hair is a unique part of many lives, and learning to care for it and embrace it is something most people say they struggle with.
Junior Pozzi Krehbiel has had many years and different experiences with her hair, and learning to love it was a process.
“When I was younger, and my mom took care of me, it was definitely harder for me because I never wanted to do it, my mom never wanted to do it,” Krehbiel said.
Learning how to care for her hair was a learning experience that took some time. Starting when she was young, knots and tangles would result in haircuts, but as she grew older, Krehbiel tried many different options, and when she found what worked for her, she stuck with it.
“I definitely got better throughout my years, because in middle school I used to just brush it and hope it would be straight,” Krehbiel said.
For other people, like sophomore Joseph Sifuentez, curly hair is much easier to handle and doesn’t require much care.
“I’ve always liked [having curly hair],” Sifuentez said.
Sifuentez said it is easy to have curly hair, and he doesn’t need a routine for his hair.
Junior Olivia Gonzalez has another point of view when it comes to living with curly hair. She started caring for and styling it during middle school, when a new wave of motivation hit her.
“I really just felt chopped in eighth grade, so I was like, let me just braid it,” Gonzalez said.
For her, loving her curls is easy, and having a role model like her sister has become something she loves. Gonzalez works on braiding her own hair, even though it takes a while, with her favorite style being criss-cross braids.
“It takes me about an hour and 30 minutes,” Gonzalez said.
Even though she enjoys her hair and styling it, at the end of the day, there is still one task that is always annoying.
“Wash days, they’re horrible,” Gonzalez said.
