Students are almost halfway through this school year. With an emotional roller coaster and new experiences made, let’s hear some of the freshmen reflect on their first semester at NHS.
The process of enrolling for freshman year can be difficult. It sneaks up and might not always go as planned. ¨While enrolling, I thought about my experience, and what was gonna be best for me,¨ freshman Lillian Newhouse said.
After choosing classes to take, there’s often an anxious wait for schedules to be released. When it finally arrives, many students experience a mix of excitement and nervousness as they look over their classes, gather the materials they’ll need, and try to find where each class is located. For some, adjusting to a new routine can be challenging, while others feel eager and ready to begin their high school journey. ¨I was happy with my classes but nervous that I wasn’t going to get enough credits,¨ freshman Daisy Bradshaw said.
Being a student-athlete can be one of the most difficult things someone has to accomplish in high school. This is where lessons are learned, and habits that will be carried with be kept forever. A transition to a new school already brings many emotions, but a transition to a higher-level sport adds more intensity. ¨I used all the free time I had to study,¨ Bradshaw said.
Not everyone chooses just athletics to fill their schedule. There are many other extracurricular activities offered. It is great for a freshman to get involved early and find hobbies. ¨My favorite part about band is getting into the games and events for free,¨ freshman Jaxon Monares said.
The first nine weeks tend to fly by for some; others, not so much. The first nine weeks of freshman year gives students a great idea of what they need to keep doing or what they need to adjust. ¨If I were to give the first quarter a word, it would be ¨stressful¨,¨ Bradhshaw said. ¨Next semester, I will prepare more for tests.¨
It is important not only to highlight the stress factors but also to emphasize all the positives. It is the students’ responsibility to thrive and make their freshman year the best it can be. ¨If I were to give the first quarter a word, it would be ¨exciting,” Newhouse said. ¨Next semester, I will push to get all A´s.¨
Many students have been in the Newton district for years, while others come from different schools. Either way, there are great opportunities for everyone. ¨It was both hard and nice not knowing many people,¨ Monares said.
