Sophomore Ty Berry prepares to shoot the ball on Jan. 22 in a game against the McPherson Bullpups. The varsity team lost 52-71.

The varsity basketball squad was looking to finish their games with the McPherson Bullpups with a victory after the junior varsity and freshman teams both had rough games. They would need a lot of help against a high-scoring Bullpup offense.

Junior Damarius Peterson had eight points with five rebounds and senior Cailen Valdez had two points with four assists. Sophomore Ty Berry had an amazing scoring night. Shooting the ball efficiently, he scored 28 points with four rebounds and two steals.

“I mean I was having a good game, I don’t care who we were playing,” Berry said. “I had some good contested shots but sometimes those won’t fall and I have to get to the basket more.”

Despite overall good offensive play by the Railers, the lack of defense kept them from ever recovering before the Bullpups pulled away in the 4th quarter.

“They have three really good players and trying to guard them all is a tough challenge and I feel like we did a really good job of that in the first three quarters of the game but started losing it in the 3rd and 4th quarter,¨ Berry said.

The boys basketball team will have a week off before traveling to Salina Central to face the Mustangs.
