This year, the Newton High School graduation ceremony will be at Fischer Field Stadium on Saturday, May 17 at 6 p.m. For the past couple of years, graduation has been at Hartman Arena but was moved back to Fischer Field this year.
“Because we were unable to book the weekend, we decided to move it back to Fischer Field,” head Principal Chad Nulik said.
Graduation being outside this year has led many people to wonder what will happen in case there is bad weather on the day of graduation. According to Nulik, if there is bad weather, it will be moved indoors. If graduation needs to be indoors, it will be in Ravenscroft Gym, and every graduate will be able to bring six guests with them. If more than six guests come for a person, they will watch a live stream of the graduation in Willis Gym, the cafeteria, or the auditorium.
“If the weather’s bad, basically what will happen is we’ll move it into Ravenscroft Gym … each graduate will be given six tickets for their family to get into Ravenscroft Gym,” Nulik said.
Graduation being outside will greatly influence many people’s decisions on what to wear. Many factors, like what the weather will be like, what shoes they are able to walk in, and how the weather might change are all things that have to be taken into consideration. Many people are especially taking into consideration what to wear if it is going to be really hot out.
“I don’t want to wear something that’s gonna be really hot so that when I go to take pictures, I’m going to look really sweaty,” senior Jacob Arias Garcia said.
Many graduates are also considering what to wear for shoes since they will be walking across Fischer Field to get their diplomas. Some girls are now considering the idea of wearing flat shoes, instead of their typical heels. On the other hand, some boys worried about comfort and staying cool in the heat. The idea of not knowing what the weather could be like on graduation day has greatly impacted some people’s ideas of what to wear.
“It’s kind of hard to walk on Fisher, so I will probably wear my campus,” senior Fiona Eckert said.
