Officer Jon Adkins is a positive force that NHS is sad to see go. Adkins has been a school resource officer for the Newton district since 2012. He has made an impact on many students and faculty in the past 11 years. Oct. 11 was his last day with the Newton Police Department. He will now work patrol in Moundridge.
Adkins has coached for many teams over the years. He has coached middle school track and football, as well as high school football and bowling. Adkins made a post with many pictures and memories of his time here.
“I mentioned in my post I made, that for many years I chose other stuff like coaching, SWAT team and other things instead of myself and my family,” Adkins said. “I’m not getting any younger and my kids are getting older so i wanted to slow down a little bit and slowing down means a career change.”
Adkins says that he will miss all the kids the most. He explained that the junior and senior classes were only in kindergarten and first grade when he started. Adkins’ favorite memory throughout his time has been getting to high-five and greeting kids as they come into school.
“I did that for eight years. Every morning at 7:30 I would just go to different elementary schools and do that. That was probably one of my favorite things to do my whole career actually,” Adkins said.
Adkins loved being somebody positive that kids could see. He said the one rule he has in his office is to smile.
“Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your lives. You know I take it very seriously and I couldn’t imagine doing anything else,” Adkins said.
