The gun violence crisis in America has become, and has been, one of the biggest problems in the country. While the Second Amendment protects the right of the people to keep and bear arms, the reality behind this freedom has led to more harm than safety. Every day, guns take the lives of innocent people with families, friends, and a future. Firearms have brought fear into communities and schools all across the country. The United States must make better efforts to regulate and control gun policies to protect people and students.

Tens of thousands of Americans die each year because of gun-related incidents. These incidents include suicides, homicides, and accidents. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the most affected groups by gun violence include teens and young adults, ages 15-34. Guns have easy accessibility, which allows people’s emotions, such as panic and anger, to result in death in seconds.

Schools are one of the most impacted places by gun violence. Since the beginning of 2025, there have been 205 school shootings, according to the K-12 School Shooting Database. That is 205 more than it should be.

Schools are not only a place of growth and education, but should also be a place of safety and security. These schools often feel dangerous to students, and schools are required to practice lockdown drills. This is to inform students on what to do in the tragic situation of someone bringing a gun to school. This should not be normal, but it is now a part of students’ lives.

No kid should go to school worried about whether something terrible will happen while they sit in class, or worry about hearing the sound of gunshots. Not only does this affect learning, but it also impacts mental health. Teachers also should not have to worry about this. They should go to provide a safe and welcoming learning environment for their students, not protect them from bullets. Think of how parents feel sending their child to school with the fear that they won’t get home safely. These fears take away the peace that is supposed to be in schools.

Better gun regulation and control don’t mean taking away the rights of the people, but about protecting the right to live. The United States of America cannot keep letting violence take over. We must enforce stricter gun laws and provide better mental health support to prevent further damage in the country. Protecting the lives of citizens and students should always come first. Safety shouldn’t be a concern. It should be a promise.
