On March 22, the Varsity Baseball team held their 13th annual Alumni Game. Past team members of all ages geared up to play one more game under the lights as a way to benefit the current team by also serving as a fundraiser event. This year the Varsity team not only held a 50/50 raffle ticket sale, but also raised funds from many community sponsorships to aide in team expenses.

Although the rain cancellation of Tuesday’s game against Hutchinson delayed the teams season opener, the alumni game served as a real game simulation for the team.

“It allows us to see our guys on the field when the ball is live. We can simulate that all we want, and scrimmage against JV, but scrimmaging against the alumni is a different level,” varsity head coach Mark George said. “It gives us better opportunities to just get better.”

This being the first game held at Klein-Scott field after the renovations of the press-box and seating, junior Henry Claassen believes these changes to the facilities aided in the game day feel.

“It’s really cool to get here and see this awesome press-box and new bleachers. It’s a really good feeling now, like we’re finally complete,” Claassen said.

Although George feels there were many positive moments in the team’s offence and defense, he believes that one particular skill to work on throughout the season is pitching depth.

“I think our first four or five guys are going to do a nice job throwing strikes. I think we need to find three or four guys that consistently throw strikes and allow our defense to get out,” George said.

Even though this was a way for the current team to have playing time before their March 26 home games against Campus, alumni Kaden Davis feels this was a way for him to catch up with old friends and coaches.

“It’s the one night a year that we get to play ball again. It’s also great to be able to play with the guys that I grew up watching and idolizing,” Davis said. “I also enjoy seeing how the high school team is doing and getting to catch up with coach George and the other coaches.”
