Daniel Dawdy, a social science teacher who also coaches football here at NHS, loves to use every minute of his day doing something. “I train for sharp performances in Salina and do one-on-one quarterback training sessions for areas in Kansas,” Dawdy said. Dawdy was inspired to start doing this because he had people in his life who helped him out in a similar way as he helps others now. Starting in December 2024, Dawdy began this side hustle. “Getting to work with athletes who are very dedicated and see the way that they approach their craft, is refreshing and very inspirational at times to see guys you know work as hard as they can, to try and reach their goals and their dreams,” Dawdy said. Dawdy is very committed to this side hustle and using up all his time. He is tenacious with his side hustle, keeping him motivated. “Wanting to be the best version of myself that I can be; I don’t like sitting still – I feel like I can always be getting something else done so having that and having someone to train and someone to work out,” Dawdy said. Bailey Born, who teaches Vocational/Tech Ed, spends her time away from school working with cattle and design. “One of them we own a cattle operation, so we run about 1,500 k right now in the winter to feed and water for other farmers around, and then my husband and I also have about 3,000 cattle right now, that’s one side hustle,” Born said. She doesn’t only have one side hustle though, she stays extra busy by also running a design business. “I design websites, business, cards, logos,” Born said. Born enjoys doing these side hustles as it brings her the opportunity to meet new people and make new friendships out of it. “At times it’s hard, but I’ve just always operated a very crazy busy life, so to me it’s no different than anything else,” Born said. PE teacher and wrestling coach Tommy Edgmon has a couple of side hustles. Edgmon’s side hustles include mowing lawns and rental houses, of which he makes a decent amount of money. “So I have a teaching income, I mow lawns for some side income, I have some rental houses for some side income, and then the other ones I probably shouldn’t say,” Edgmon said. Through his lawn business, he gets customers to show up weekly, and he manicures their lawns and receives income.
“They pay me in benjimans,” Edgmon said. For his rental business, he buys houses and then gives them out to people who are in need of a place to live. Edgmon is motivated to continue these side hustles because of the income he receives which allows him to have the extra things that he wants.
“Benjamins, baby,” Edgmon said.
