“Remember that Time is money,” said Benjamin Franklin in his famous letter, “Advice to a Young Tradesman” according to the National Archives. This is exactly what the students at the beginning of the electrical program acquiesce. In this program, students are going to gain an understanding of how wires are connected to make light and are given a perspective on electricity and see the career from a different point of view.
Thinking about a career is something that students have their minds on as they get older. One group of students decided to dedicate their time by going through the new electrical program at NHS.
“I’m expecting to learn simple wiring, hopefully learn about meters. Right now we’re learning about work ethics and I’ll hopefully learn about that too,” said senior Connor Graber from Hesston High School.
The students in the program have started thinking about what they want to do when their high school years are up and they go off to college/ trade school or go right into their career of choice.
“I’ve gotten set up with Kansas Electric and I plan on coming a master electrician and then starting my own company and I’ve just been putting a lot of work into that,” said senior Jett Miller
A group of adults have been planning and putting this program together piece by piece since August of 2023.
“I think it was about February when I looked at them and I said, ‘We’re brainstorming all this, I need to know are we a go or not’” said CTE Director Diane Moser.
Going through this new change in the high school has brought challenges along the way in the making of this program. The program was presented with a $50,000 check from the owner of Kansas Electric, Tim Sweigart. The money has been spent on various materials such as the electrical panels in the classroom as well as the lights and outlets. They have also used this money to buy all the tools and equipment, curriculum pieces, and professors.
“We look at the market and what’s in demand in areas for jobs and electrical has always been high for Harvey County and Sedgwick,” said Moser
