Every year millions of football fans come together to play Fantasy Football. Fantasy Football is an online game where participants draft real NFL football players to create their own team. The season begins in early Sept. and continues throughout the fall and winter for 14 weeks, normally ending right around the NFL Playoffs.
A survey of 105 NHS students concluded that 51.4% of students at NHS play Fantasy Football. Junior Niko Ramos is part of two separate leagues, one with the NHS football team and the other with his friends. Ramos started playing in sixth grade but said he hasn’t played every year since. Ramos has quarterback Patrick Mahomes from the Chiefs, running back Josh Jaco
bs from the Raiders and kicker Jason Myers from the Seahawks for one of his teams. Scoring in Fantasy Football depends on how well each of the players do during their games in real life.
“So, like it depends on the person who is running the league how points are scored but usually if you get one yard it translates to like a point or however the leader of the league decides,” Ramos said. “But like touchdowns are worth like 7 points or usually 10 but basically whoever scores more wins. Sometimes defenses score you points and if one of your players does bad, you will go negative points, so it hurts you.”
Many leagues will hold draft parties at the beginning of the season. Sophomore Max Rose and Ramos said players they see get picked first are Jamar Chase, Josh Jacobs, Patrick Mahomes, Tyreek Hill, Travis Kelce and Josh Allen. Ramos and his friends went to Applebee’s to hold their draft party.
“Applebee’s had their boneless wings challenge [at the time], so basically whoever ate the most boneless wings I think they got to pick first in the draft or choose whoever they pick,” Ramos said. “Whoever got last and ate the least amount of wings, which was me, had to go directly after Applebee’s to the track and run two miles in under eight minutes each mile and I had to do it in a full suit at 10 o’clock.”
Similar to Ramos, senior Jarrett Schmidt had a draft party with his youth group. In his league they let the computer determine who gets to draft first.
“I have Brock Purty as my starting quarterback. I had Justin Jefferson and James Connor but they are in my IR. Let’s see I have the 49ers’ defense and a bunch of them are like four string guys so I have no clue what their names are,” Schmidt said. “[My team is looking] awful, a lot of guys are injured on my team and bi-week has been hitting me hard.”
Rose’s team is also not looking good. He has drafted quarterback Josh Allen from the Buffalo Bills, running back Bijan Robinson from the Falcons and running back Alvin Kamara from the Saints.
“Everybody I have played has had an out. I keep losing off of other people having lucky games,” Rose said.
Rose plays with close friends and family. He has been playing for around six years while Schmidt has been playing for four. In some Fantasy Football leagues, participants will have a winning prize and a punishment for the loser. Rose and Schmidt don’t have either within their league. However, in Ramos’ league, the loser gets a punishment.
“The loser has to get put in a dog cage and strung to a tree and we spin him around and dump food all over him. So you really don’t want to get last place,” Ramos said.
