National Honors Society sold candy canes to students for the NHS fundraiser committee. Junior and NHS member Kennedy Seidl said this fundraiser was to earn money for their committee. The candy canes were sold last Thursday and Friday during lunch. Seidl helped sell these candy canes during second lunch last Friday.
During this fundraiser, students could buy one candy cane for $1. Four options were sold, if a student wanted to send one to their friend they would buy a red one, a blue one for secret admirers, a green one for outstanding teachers and a rainbow one for dating. Seidl said many people came by her stand and bought candy canes.
“[The color that was most popular was] probably blue which was [for] secret admirers or green which was [outstanding] teacher,” Seidl said.
Seidl said there were a lot of students who were buying blue candy canes and they had to keep re-stocking.
“People would do it … to their normal friends as a joke,” Seidl said.
Senior McKinley Mueller bought six candy canes, one on Thursday and five on Friday. Four candy canes were blue, for a secret admirer, and two were red, for friends. She said all of her candy canes were just for her friends and not actual secret admirers.
“I think that [buying the candy canes] was a waste of $6,” Mueller said.
A survey was later sent out to the student body. Out of 40 responses, 31.4% of people bought candy canes for their friends and 34.3% bought rainbow candy canes for dating. Most students only bought one candy cane, but the highest response was a student who bought eight candy canes. The candy canes were sent out and delivered by NHS members on Monday.
