Students discuss vending machine favorites
There are six functioning vending machines that hold food and drink options for students to get during their free time here at the high school. During the 2022-23 school year, Newton High School signed a five-year contract with Coca-Cola giving us a new vending machine. Prices range from $1 to $2 depending on the item. The Coca-Cola vending machine holds nine items per row, with 10 different drink options.
You can locate a vending machine in four different places around the school, two by the Railer mural, two by the art hallway, another by the lunchroom and the last being over by Ravenscroft gym. Prices for the vending machine are marked below or next to the item. Two of the vending machines are owned by NHS gym teacher and wrestling coach, Tommy Edgmon. During the 2022-23 school year Edgmon has the two vending machines he owns bring a profit to support the Railer wrestling team.
“I’ve owned other vending machines, so I wanted to have an investment that benefited the wrestling team,” Edgmon said. “Each item is $1, while the energy drinks are $1.50. I feel like everyone has a dollar rather than like $1.50.”
Throughout the school, you will see two food vending machines along with three other drink vending machines. Some of the options in these machines are sugar-free or diet pops such as Diet Coke, along with two different brands of water and Propel flavored water. Some of the food options for students to purchase include chocolate chip Rice Krispie Treats and a variety of Dorito chip flavors.
“I buy from vending machines about once a week,” senior Alicia Gaeddert said. “I prefer the drink vending machines and I usually get the Strawberry Kiwi Propel water. I like that we got new vending machines and new options.”
