Kansas not considered lively; still is home

More stories from Aydan Rolph

Kansas is lame. Granted, Kansas is flat, and on road trips the most pleasant thing someone can see is a wind turbine, as it is a lovely break from the endless fields of corn. Okay, Kansas is on the brink of not having school and plunging into an illiterate chaos. Sure, Kansas is not doing the best economically- the 43rd worst state in the Union- However, Kansas does lead America in two things: the governor has the highest disapproval rating and the state leads America in most pornography watched. The Sunflower State does not even lead in sunflower production. Thank God for Dorothy, otherwise Kansas may not even be a state. However, Kansas’ greatest strength may be that it is one of the quirkiest states.

Who can even name another pilot besides Kansan, Amelia Earhart? The windiest city in America is Dodge City. Smith County is the center of the continental states. The biggest ball of twine is in Cawker City. Could you really picture it in any other state?

The mundanity of Kansas inspires an abundance of time to daydream, and to accomplish. Walter Chrysler founded the Chrysler corporation, a leading car company. Dwight Eisenhower grew up in Abilene. The first African-American woman to win an Academy Award was Hattie McDaniel. The first female mayor was Susan Madora Salter of Argonia. Other celebrities include: Langston Hughes, Barry Sanders and Dan and Frank Carney.

While Kansas is mundane, void of scenery and a lackluster place to live, it is a unique place.
