The Newton Railer soccer team was looking to rebound on homecoming week after losing a close road game with Haysville-Campus 1-0 earlier in the week. The junior varsity would get off on the right foot against the Cougars in the first half. Freshman Santiago Fernandez and Gage Lettau would continue their excellent play on junior varsity when Fernandez would score off an assist from Lettau. The Railers looked good throughout the game, but Salina South’s defense was strong throughout the as well. Newton JV soccer would only need the one goal from Fernandez to secure a 1-0 victory.
The varsity team is undefeated at home so far this season outscoring their opponents 17-3 in the process, however they would fall behind early as Salina South would score early on. From that point on, the game was absolutely dominated by the Railers. Senior Jose Rojas would even the game up late in the first half with an assist by Brayden Cornejo. Right out of gate in the second half, Senior Bruno Duran would put the Railers ahead for good with help from junior Jose Moreno. After a shot by Rojas was credited as an own goal off a deflection by a Cougar defender, senior Edward Valdivia would get in on the scoring act with help from senior Andy Deckert. The Railer offense was well-balanced as four Railers combined for the six goals on the night. Senior Hervey Medina continues his strong home showing as goalie as of late, giving up just one goal in the past three games.
Varsity record goes to 6-4 on the season while JV pushes their record to 4-1-2. Both teams will be playing tuesday evening, hosting the Derby Panthers.
