In a world that is now dominated by technology, students, and staff might find joy and passion in collecting from the smallest of coins to the rarest records, they collect for a purpose.
Personal collections start whenever and wherever the passion of collecting begins. This hobby is not specific to one group of people and is available to everyone wanting to try something new.
¨Well, I collect a lot of things, but my main thing I collect is vinyls or records, Well, my dad has always had a record collection, and I would see the type of music he likes and it’s nothing with what I like. So I just wanted to do something else and then I figured, let me just collect records. If I had to guess I probably have over 300 [records],” senior Karla Lopez said.
Collections are not just rocks, coins, or comic books. The major downside when it comes to collecting items is the impact it can have on the wallet. Plus, the time it takes to obtain items for the collection.
“I collect Marvel and Star Wars Funko Pops, [I started in] Fourth grade because my dad had a bunch, and he was like, you might like these. I probably around 100 around 100. Not anymore I used to, but not anymore. Kind of was like 10 to $15 per pop, I kind of did not like the Star Wars ones they were putting out. And I was not huge into Star Wars, yeah, and I am trying to collect more Marvel ones, but I am just broke,” Senior Hannah Tate said
There is not an age limit to starting or adding anything to your collection and it is an activity that anyone can do and enjoy. English teacher Kyanda Faythe indulges with a very impressive collection that covers her room.
“It is a collection of Pez dispensers. Yeah, it started my freshman year of college so I was right out of high school, and I lived with two girls in the apartment, yeah, and one of the girls Moms always sent us care packages for our midterm exams and final exams. Well, mine had, like, one of those bouncy or like, squeaky hammers, and then Pez dispensers. And then my roommates are like, Oh, you like, Pez, here you can have some. And it just sort of happened from there, yeah. So now, like, you know, previous students, I mean, anybody that sees all of my crazy Pez. I think that definitely it defines my classroom cause I have 454 of them,” Faythe said.
In life, there are always preferences, and with these massive and impressive amounts of objects in the collections they do not have to be used or be their favorite.
“My favorite one is Michael Jackson’s Thriller, yeah, because it is an original, my uncle kept it in the wrap when it came out in 1983 and so it is like mint condition. So you know, that couldn’t money with that. was my that was, yeah, that was my first item,” Lopez said.
Owning or having an assortment of certain items gives students and teachers something to do in their free time and is unique in itself. It also provides individuals sense of happiness.
“So I think collections are something that bring you joy, yeah? And that means something to you. So, for example, I held a collection of signed or autographed books. Yeah, that are, you know, that are near and dear to me, whereas, like my Pez dispensers, they’re near and dear to me, but not nearly as much. I guess it’s just near to in a different way, I suppose so. probably just a myriad of objects that make you happy,” Faythe said.
