Each year the State Fair attracts a wide variety of individuals to Hutchinson. With many entertaining activities for all ages, Newton High School students have found many ways to enjoy their time at the State Fair.
Some students come for the thrill of the rides and the amazing food while other students come to show their best animals that they have been training for months. Kids who show livestock are very dedicated to what they do and put a lot of effort into succeeding in this competition. Freshman Kyleigh Williams said she faces all kinds of challenges including staying the night there and waking up as early as six in the morning. They do this to ensure that their animal is in good condition for the show.
“[Some of the challenges I have faced have been] trying to wake up early to get them in the barn,” Williams said. “I have to wake up at six when I’m here.”
Other people’s experiences are very different considering they go to the State Fair to have a good time and hang out with friends. Junior Allison Boese said she had the time of her life spending time with friends she is very close with. Boese also said that her favorite part was riding the ride called the Ring of Fire. This ride travels around a hoop and spins you upside down, occasionally the ride will stop while passengers are upside down to increase the excitement.
“My favorite ride was the Ring of Fire because it was super fun even though my friend Ellie passed out,” Boese said.
Junior Ellie Entz said that passing out was definitely a weird experience and she barely even felt anything happen. Fortunately, everyone made it through the ride safely. Entz said that the friends she was with definitely could tell when she passed out. They explained it to her and said that she stopped screaming and dropped her head for a little then regained consciousness.
“I barely even felt like I passed out. [My friends said] that I was screaming and then my head dropped. [They explained it as] I would stop screaming for a second and then once my head came back up, I would start screaming again,” Entz said. “I felt a little dizzy but that was pretty much it.”
On top of the thrilling roller coasters, another must-do at the State Fair is getting all the good food, especially all the deep-fried items. Some popular deep-fried foods include deep-fried Oreos, fried pickles, and funnel cakes. Pronto pups are also a great option open to people looking for a meal.
“My favorite thing I ate was the fried pickles,” Boese said. “They were so good. They were definitely the best fried pickles I have ever had.”
The State Fair has something for everyone. No matter who you are or what you like to do. The activities there include riding rides, getting food, winning prizes, showing animals, and walking through buildings to explore. Other buildings have impressive artwork such as the butter sculpture that is created every year. No matter what you enjoy doing, you can always count on having fun at the State Fair.
“You should come to the State Fair [next year when it comes back to town],” Williams said.
