STUCO brings the heat with new class point system. At the beginning of this year, students were presented with a new point system that will keep track of student participation in school activities. The goal is to score the most class of the year (COTY) points and get a potential class prize at the end of the year. Students can earn points toward their grades by participating in spirit week and attending athletic events, dances, or other school activities.
“It’s a competition between each grade to see who can be the most involved in the school and then there’s a prize for whichever class has the most points … this is something that has been done in the past … we wanted to continue it to get more people involved in the school and to help increase engagement in all of the activities that STUCO plans,” senior Mara Oswald said.
Senior Abram Wall said that in the past, students had been taken by bus to Worlds of Fun as a prize for the COTY points and shared his excitement about potential prizes for this year.
“It’ll increase participation and stuff because in previous years we have had prizes and it’s just more fun … so far I’d definitely say people are sticking around at football games. We haven’t had a spirit week yet but I am excited to see how that goes,” Wall said.
According to senior Natalie Cassant, students must stay until the end of the third quarter of athletic events to be counted for the COTY points. If it is a game that does not have quarters it is still required to stay a little over half of the game to be counted.
“Sometimes it’s hard cause some of us won’t be at the games […] [For dances] right as you walk in we’ll ask what grade you are, then get your tallies. We just want you to show up, honestly. [For] spirit week, [it’s] seminars, so you have to be in costume until seminar,” Cassant said.
Cassant said that since STUCO members may not attend all the games, sending in a picture while at the event may be a way to get class points.
“We’re expecting that it’ll get people excited to go to games and that there will be a lot of people at our dances, which has been a problem before, and that everyone will be proud to be a Railer and want to participate in all of our activities,” Oswald said. “Seniors are winning with 139, juniors are at 138, sophomores are at 116, and freshmen are at 75 … so far it’s going really well.”
