Before racing in the 100 yard backstroke event, freshman Anne Koontz places her feet in preparation to launch backwards into the water.

The girls swim team competed in their first invitational of the season at Northwest High School on Mar. 26. In the invitational, the team took eighth place overall. To prepare, the experienced team members focused more on distance swimming- while the inexperienced focused on their technique and/or basics.

“I think us girls have been very flexible with what we have and we are going to have a great season!” sophomore Lauren Crawford said.

Due to complications with our pool heater being broken, the swimmers have been practicing at 6 a.m. at the YMCA. Unfortunately, the YMCA’s pool does not have diving blocks- therefore, all inexperienced swimmers had to learn how to properly dive off of the blocks during their warm up session at the meet.

“Morning practices make me pretty tired throughout the day but I think it is kind of nice to not have anything after school. Not having gone off of the blocks was scary going into the first meet but when we got there and did it, it was fine,” freshman Lillian Schloneger said.
