Junior Josh Edson fights to get out of a hold.

On Dec. 8, the Newton varsity wrestling team traveled to Douglass to compete in their annual tournament against many other high schools from the surrounding area. This is the teams second tournament of the year, not including duals.

“Wrestling went well, but not as good as I wanted it to go, but that just means that there is a lot to improve on and better myself and the rest of the team for TOC and state,” said junior Grant Treaster

Along with the wrestlers, selected cheerleaders also traveled to Douglass to cheer for the team. The cheerleaders rotate spots with each other to travel to wrestling duals and away tournaments. There are only seven selected that can attend each away tournament.

“I feel that everyone did a really good job even though some of them were sick and injured, they still gave it their best and a lot of people ended up doing really well,” said senior Briar Grant.

Newton finished their tournament with many wrestlers continuing  into finals. These wrestlers included sophomore Gaige Llamas, juniors Grant Treaster and Boone Roberson, and seniors Dante Harper and Wyatt Hendrickson. Hendrickson took first, winning finals.
